Summer Gathering

A lounge by the pool; tall glass of ice tea in hand; a warm summer breeze; relaxing conversation; the heart calming sound of children playing; people engaged in friendly challenges during a game; and family and friends laughter……..sounds like a recipe for an incredibly enjoyable afternoon.
The Association of Black Women Physicians recognizes that a number of sacrifices are made in the course of being a key individual in overseeing the care of others.  Every summer there is an event that brings friends and family together to simply relax.  There is no fan fare or extravagance,  there is quite honestly a goal of making this an occasion where the people set the pace and work is set aside, if only for a few hours.
Last year it was held in the enchanting hills of Topanga Canyon this year it was hosted in the comfortable setting of a member’s home.  It was a day of pleasant communications and self-care.

Andriette T. Ward, MD, MPH

Bio

Dr. Andriette Ward is a general pediatrician who currently holds a position as a Clinical Instructor in the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.  She received a BA from Yale University in New Haven, CT, an MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, and an MPH in Health Services Research from UCLA.

Dr. Ward is a motivated clinical researcher dedicated to conducting culturally appropriate community-based research among ethnic minority populations.  Currently, Dr. Ward is assisting on an NIH-funded multi-site trial to evaluate Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY).  In this capacity, she works with a multidisciplinary team to pilot test and implement this study that heavily recruits ethnic minority adolescents with diabetes.  In addition, Dr. Ward has collaborated with two commercially-available pediatric weight-management programs (Kids N Fitness and POWERPLAYMD) to assess the effectiveness of these programs for achieving initial and sustained weight-loss among overweight pediatric patients. Currently, she is developing a pilot program to design and evaluate alternative strategies for the treatment of severely overweight adolescents.   Dr. Ward was featured in the February 2006 issue of O Magazine, and was an invited guest on the Today Show because of her innovative ideas and personal weight-loss success.

Dr. Ward maintains her ties with several community pediatricians to better facilitate the translation of research to the community.  She is a member of several medical organizations, and serves on the board of the Association of Black Women Physicians.
