The Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) mourns the tragic loss of Dr. Cerina Fairfax—a beloved dentist, devoted mother, and cherished member of our community—to an act of domestic violence. Her passing, along with the recent loss of other prominent Black women in April 2026, underscores a devastating reality: domestic violence knows no boundaries and affects women across all professions and backgrounds.

The Scope of the Crisis:

1 in 3 women in the U.S. will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime.
45% of Black women report experiencing such violence, bearing a disproportionate burden of this public health crisis.
Over 1/2 of all female homicides are related to intimate partner violence.

As Black women physicians, we recognize our unique responsibility to use our expertise and platforms to demand change. Healthcare settings are critical touchpoints for intervention, and we are calling on all providers to implement trauma-informed screening and support for both patients and colleagues.

Domestic violence is preventable. Every woman deserves to live free from fear, and every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment.

We cannot have a "spectacular celebration of freedom" without ensuring our communities have the health and wellness they deserve.

Advocacy in Action: ABWP President-Elect Dr. Anastasia Williams Challenges New CDC Vaccine Guidelines

ABWP President-Elect Dr. Anastasia Williams is leading the charge against recent changes to the CDC’s childhood vaccine schedule, which has seen recommended immunizations slashed from 18 down to 11. Speaking with the San Fernando Valley Sun/el Sol, Dr. Williams expressed "grave concerns" over the new federal guidelines, noting that they mirror countries with universal healthcare while ignoring the harsh realities of health disparities and barriers to care in the United States. Dr. Williams warns that these arbitrary cuts—often made by non-medical professionals—threaten to undermine the doctor-patient relationship and leave our most vulnerable children at risk for preventable diseases. As California pledges to maintain the higher standard of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) schedule, Dr. Williams remains a steadfast voice for science, trust, and the protection of our communities.

It Can’t Happen Again – SNAP Feeds Our Babies

During the last 54 days of political bickering, the families of some 16 million children worried about having enough food to eat as federal food stamp payments, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, stopped on November 1st. The deal being struck in Congress will offer a reprieve from the hunger pangs through next year, but I need to tell you why this can’t happen again.

I am a neonatologist that cares for critically ill infants. I fight for miracles and often celebrate with exhausted relief for the babies who beat the odds. The pain comes when we don’t always get a reprieve from the suffering. The piercing wails from a mother after I tell her we couldn’t prevent her baby from dying are knife wounds in my heart that can never fully heal.

There is nothing normal or natural about a baby dying. Babies are innocent, vulnerable… and nonpartisan. Saving their lives is the work of my entire career. Neonatologists like me can only do so much. Truthfully, government programs like SNAP and WIC have saved more lives than neonatologists will ever do.

But who speaks up for the babies? In the last few weeks, news media cycles have churned through the impact of the federal government shutdown on farmers, TSA agents, Air Traffic Controllers, and active-duty military working without pay. It was a mother’s plea that pierced through all the political noise for me.

When a mother called into CSPAN and begged House Speaker Mike Johnson to do something about the shutdown, there was no denying the anger, frustration and fear in her voice. Without her husband’s military paycheck, she said, they couldn’t afford the medicines her medically fragile children needed to stay alive. She didn’t ask for a neonatologist. She asked for the government to fund programs like SNAP benefits that children desperately need. Whether you realize it or not, you probably know someone using SNAP to buy infant formula, cereals and other baby foods. Did you know that one out of every five kids across the US relies on these benefits?

It gave me some comfort to know that people stepped up to make a difference . Food banks went into crisis mode and prepared to do as much as possible while political pundits filled airtime blaming each other for this “unprecedented” catastrophe. The babies, however, remained invisible, and I need you to understand what happens when people struggle to feed their babies.

It starts in emergency rooms across the country… Some babies show up having seizures. Healthcare teams run blood tests and discover the babies have dangerously low salt levels. The teams ask more questions and learn that families were diluting infant formula with extra water to make it last. Other babies come in with unexplained bruises and possibly broken bones. Social workers ask more questions and find out the babies were hungry and crying nonstop. A (hungry) frustrated person couldn’t take the crying and screaming anymore and did the unthinkable to babies who were innocent, vulnerable… and nonpartisan.

We cannot repeat the chaos of this shutdown in 2026. While SNAP and WIC benefits are not a cure-all, they are an undeniable bridge to another day for those who might otherwise succumb to the suffering. As a society, we cannot stand by and let a dysfunctional government condemn our babies to suffer — and yes, to die. Yes, it is impossible for one person to end our political divide, and this is why we must come together to demand a functioning and unified government.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, So Let's Talk Symptoms with Dr. Sarah Jam

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so let’s talk signs and symptoms.

In its early stages, breast cancer can be completely asymptomatic or commonly show up with a new breast lump. There are a few less common symptoms that you should be aware of:

��Sudden, asymmetrical breast size change (one side larger/smaller).

��Warm, red, or swollen skin on the breast (possible sign of inflammatory breast cancer).

��Inverted nipple or change in nipple shape.

��Persistent itchiness in the breast or nipple area.

��Dimpled or orange-peel-like skin texture.

��Red or purple blotches that don’t go away.

Breast changes can happen either quickly or over time. The important thing to remember is not to panic or delay—schedule a visit with a healthcare provider to get an accurate, early diagnosis.

Even though these changes might have a different cause, early detection and treatment give you the best chance for a positive outcome if breast cancer is diagnosed.

A Message of Honor for Former President Jimmy Carter

The Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) joins the nation in honoring the extraordinary life and legacy of former President Jimmy Carter. A tireless advocate for justice, a champion for human rights, and servant leader, President Carter’s impact on civil rights, global peace, and health care has left an indelible mark on our society and the world.

President Carter’s commitment to justice began early in his political career, as Governor of Georgia. In his 1971 inaugural address, he boldly declared, “the time for racial discrimination is over” setting the tone for his leadership, where he worked to dismantle systemic barriers. His presidency extended this commitment, boldly acting to address racial and economic inequalities and promote access to education and health as fundamental rights.

In 1977, President Carter appointed Andrew Young as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, the first African American reflecting Carter’s belief in diversifying leadership and amplifying marginalized voices. Young’s tenure strengthened U.S. relationships with developing nations and embodied Carter’s vision for global cooperation and justice.

A steadfast steadfast commitment to diplomacy and human rights defined President Carter’s presidency. He recognized Panama’s sovereignty and peacefully transferred control of the canal, resolving decades of tension, and reflecting his belief in fairness. Brokering the Camp David Accords , and negotiating the release of American hostages in Tehran exemplified his diplomatic efforts. In each instance, Carter’s leadership, demonstrated the power of diplomacy to bring change amid significant opposition.

President Carter’s relationship with Coretta Scott King reflected his deep connection to the civil rights movement. Collaborating frequently, Carter supported efforts to preserve Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy. In 1980, President Carter signed Public Law 96-428, which established the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Site, ensuring that Dr. King’s contributions to justice and equality were preserved.

President Carter’s administration also made significant strides in education launching the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) , ensuring these vital institutions received much-needed support. By directing funding to HBCUs, President Carter helped expand educational access and promoted their unique role in shaping future leaders.

Beyond his presidency, President Carter lived his Christian values by uplifting marginalized communities. With Habitat for Humanity he built homes and hope for countless families. Through the Carter Center , he used the power of the presidency to save hundreds of thousands of lives through global initiatives addressing disease eradication and election integrity. His enduring commitment earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Reflecting on President Carter’s life, we are reminded of his words: “We can choose to alleviate suffering. We can choose to work together for peace. We can make these changes — and we must.” These words challenge us to continue his work, striving for justice and a better future for all.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family and join the nation in celebrating the remarkable legacy of a man who believed in the power of service, compassion, and a more equitable world.

To financially support the California female medical students and for the improvement of public health and welfare through the advancement of knowledge concerning women and community health.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must be female medical students who are permanent residents of California at any medical school, or students at a California medical school, who are in good academic standing.

Black Maternal Health Week 2024

Join us for a week of awareness, advocacy and community building!

The African American Infant and Maternal Mortality Prevention Initiative (AAIMM) proudly supports the seventh annual celebration of Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), April 11-17.

Founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), BMHW is a week of awareness, activism, and community building. The week kicks off on April 11, which is globally recognized as International Day for Maternal Health and Rights – an opportunity to join the worldwide community advocating for the elimination of maternal mortality.

This year’s AAIMM activities for Black Maternal Health Week serve to amplify the voices of Black mamas and birthing persons and center the values and history of the reproductive and birth justice movements.

From Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA):

We are thrilled to reveal the official theme for Black Maternal Health Week 2024 (#BMHW24): “Our Bodies STILL Belong to Us: Reproductive Justice NOW!” Widespread restrictions on abortion care access coupled with rising cases of criminalization due to pregnancy loss continue to widen the gaps of adverse maternal and birth outcomes in the U.S. Many of the states with the most restrictive abortion bans have the worst maternal and child health outcomes and the least supportive social welfare and family support programs, particularly for Black women and birthing people. The time is NOW to demand for comprehensive public and private insurance coverage for maternal, sexual, and reproductive health care; improve access to care across geographies and birth settings; issue guidance to health care providers, institutions, insurance companies, and related entities on providing equitable, high-quality, patient-centered care; and funding research and programs that center and utilize scholarship of Black women and birthing people, as fully described in BMMA’s comprehensive Policy Agenda .

BMMA continues to highlight and center culturally-congruent practices with a focus on Black Midwifery care and full-spectrum Black-led Doula care, as sound, evidence-based solutions. Most importantly, these are practices and solutions that incorporate the true needs, wants, and desires of Black women and birthing people.

AAIMM stands in solidarity with BMMA toward growing the village of support around Black women and birthing persons before, during, and after pregnancy and birth. During BMHW, we will be sharing events from organizations within our network — including those hosted by our AAIMM Community Action Teams — creating social media posts and digital content, and providing information, which will enable us to get closer to our goal of bringing about more equitable birthing outcomes for all women.

Black Maternal Health Studies 2023

Studies Show Maternal Mortality Rates Have Worsened, Disproportionately Affecting Black and American Indian and Alaska Native Individuals

New research from IHME and Mass General Brigham shows US maternal mortality trends have worsened from 1999 to 2019. Black women, American Indian and Alaska Native women (AIAN) are at increased risk, particularly in states where inequities had not previously been highlighted. The study was published on July 3 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and it is relevant to anyone and everyone who wants to see these trends improve for women in the US.

This data has been cited in recent coverage by New York Times Opinion , POLITICO , PBS Newshour , Reuters , and many others.

Already, there is policy impact because of this research: just a week after our study was published, US senators Booker , Warnock , Menendez , and Padilla reintroduced the Kira Johnson Act (included in the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act of 2023) to improve maternal health outcomes for women of color in the US. All four announcements cited our study .

ABWP Representing at the KJLH Women's Health Expo 2023 in Long Beach

Sharing what a fantastic time that some of #ABWP members had at the KJLHJ Women's Health Expo representing the research arm of UCLA as a member of the Community Advisory Board for the Black Women and Inflammation Tau Study (BWITS) funded by the National Institute of Aging.

We generated a lot of conversation around brain health and recruited potential subjects for our clinical trial looking at the impact of lifestyle on Black women's cognition.

There were so many connections cultivated including a former mentee from Sarah's Daughters, Marquenita McBride, pharma rep extraordinaire Clarice Kavanaugh, and so many others.

Special shout out to our ABWP MDs sis-stars Dr. Sherrill Rieux and ABWP Immediate Past President D r. Cozzette Lyons-Jones who killed the main stage, in addition to Long Beach City Council member Joni Ricks-Oddie who is walking the talk.

ABWP Extend Our Condolences to the Family, Friends and Loved Ones of Dr. Nakita Mortimer

With heavy hearts, we extend our condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Dr. Nakita Mortimer. We also mourn the loss of a brilliant and beautiful Black woman physician. Her tragic death reverberates throughout our communities, and we stand in solidarity with calls for systemic and institutional changes within the profession of medicine.

As we navigate this difficult time, we strongly encourage empathetic and honest discussions about improving mental health services for our medical students, physicians in training and physician colleagues. We support effective efforts to reduce the stigma of mental illness, particularly for those representing minoritized communities. We know we need to do more to prevent the estimated 400 physician deaths by suicide each year in the United States. We urge the implementation of innovative practices that decrease rates of depression, anxiety, burnout, substance use disorders and deaths by suicide.

The culture of medicine must shift. Realistic work hours, demands and responsibilities, access to confidential mental health services, commitment to physician wellness and inclusive, nontoxic work environments all need to become a part of a healthy normalization for our profession. This is also how we optimize the care we provide for our patients and support equitable health outcomes.

ABWP encourages all members of our physician community to acknowledge the impact of our profession on our physical, mental and emotional well-being. ABWP will continue to provide a safe space for our medical students, physicians in training and physician colleagues to share experiences and provide support for one another.

Subsequently, more than ten Tougaloo students followed her lead and have graduated Harvard Medical and Dental School. Opening the doors of Tougaloo College Hall of Fame, in 1992 she became the first in Tougaloo's inaugural group to be inducted in the field of medicine. Similarly in 2002, Dr. Sherrod became the first African American in the inaugural group to be inducted into University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Fielding School of Public Health Hall of Fame. Her outstanding service in public health included founding the Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) of Los Angeles with 48 charter members in 1982. ABWP's vision is to empower women physicians to lead in health and wellness, and to increase the number and status of Black women physicians in medicine.

At an early age, Dr. Sherrod along with her ten siblings became promoters of civil rights as members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). She integrated Coker's cafe in downtown Hollandale, Mississippi in the eight grade. Graduating valedictorian from Simmons High School in 1967, a summer spent at Tougaloo College National Science Foundation enrichment program, freed her from picking cotton for two cents per pound, and spurred her interest in medicine. She attributes her advocacy for human rights to her ancestors and cousins, Dr. Daniel Webster Sherrod, the first Black physician in Macon, Mississippi (1896). A lynch mob ran him out of Macon in 1906 to Meridian, Mississippi where he established Sherrod Drug Company, since 1906, and continued his care for people of color. And his brother, Dr. John Percy Sherrod, the first Black physician in Port Gibson, Mississippi, was lynched for treating, and curing a white woman that white physicians had failed to heal. Dr. Sherrod's steadfastness in influencing health equity and inclusion was apparent as she, later in her career, served on the Centers for Disease Control Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).

After earning a bachelor's degree from an HBCU, Tougaloo College, 1971, she received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1975. Dr. Sherrod completed her post graduate training by 1980, at UCLA Medical Center in Pediatrics and Infectious Disease, served as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar, and completed her Master of Public Health in Health Services Administration. Later in her career she earned a Certificate in Healthcare Policy and Medical Management from the University of Southern California.

During the early 1980s, Dr. Sherrod established herself in the field of medicine by publishing the landmark study on "Compliance in Immunizations', Journal of Pediatrics, 1983, by serving as a Los Angeles County Public Health Commissioner for five years and collaborating with Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Ambassador of Health, Dionne Warwick, to advance community education on HIV and AIDS. As a private Pediatric Infectious Disease Consultant she parlayed her knowledge to others as a visiting Assistant Professor at the David Geffen UCLA School of Medicine, UCLA Medical Center. Backed by years of professional expertise, Dr. Sherrod served as Chief Physician and Hospital Epidemiologist at Martin Luther King, Jr. Drew Medical Center of the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Simultaneously, Dr. Sherrod served as Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, which recently became the first historically black medical school west of the Mississippi River. With inadequate staff support, she successfully reduced MLK's hospital nosocomial infection rate by 50 percent in one year, to abort the closure of the hospital from excess mortality related to infections in hospitalized patients.

Retired from medicine, Dr. Sherrod dedicates herself to the community impacting women health as the founder of the Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) Los Angeles, which is only the second of its kind in the United States. ABWP has donated scholarships to approximately 500 medical students over the past 40 years. Driven to impact diversity and inclusion she aligns herself with both civic and medical organizations, including the National Medical Association, a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Women's Association, American Medical Association, National Medical Fellowship, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, National Council of Black Women, California Black Women's Health Network, Black Women for Wellness, and the Brotherhood Crusaders.

She was recently featured in the book "Against All Odds: Celebrating Black Women in Medicine" and has been featured in both Ebony, Jet and Black Enterprises magazines. Throughout her career she has won numerous awards and honors through the California State Senate and Legislature, Los Angeles County Commission for Women, Chi Eta Phi and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Though her career has been filled with highlights, including national appearances on CBS, NBC, Lifetime Television, Tony brown's Journal, KJLH and Fox News, she takes the most pride in her advocacy for better health policy for women and children.

Dr. Sherrod has impacted public health policy in diversity, equity and inclusion through the Association of Black Women Physicians, serving as chair of the Pediatric Section of the National Medical Association, as a founding member of the NMA Council on Concerns of Women Physicians, as a co-founder of the International Coalition of Women Physicians, as a Freedom Sister at the Los Angeles Museum of Tolerance and as a member of the ACIP at the Centers for Disease Control. The cornerstone of her overall success lay with her ancestors, parents, family, and mentors, including Mr. T. R. & Howard Sanders, and Mr. Bernard Weathers from Simmons High School, Dr. Bharati D. Mehrothra, PhD, from Tougaloo College, Dr. Delihas from Brookhaven National Laboratory and Dr. Paul Torrens from Fielding UCLA School of Public Health. In the future, Dr. Sherrod intends to document her life journey as a Black women physician.

The story talked about KP African American member Jessyka Ramirez-Holden, 34, who gave birth to her son, Eze, recently at KP West L.A. Medical Center. Jessyka, who had several underlying health conditions and was aware of the challenges she and many Black mothers experience during their pregnancy and child delivery, explained how important it was for her to identify and choose a trusted doctor who could ensure a healthy pregnancy and deliver a healthy baby knowing her background, which she did.

That was important to her, she said, considering Black women are more than three times as likely to die from pregnancy-related complications as white women, regardless of their income or education.

She chose Dr. La Tanya Hines, Baldwin Hills – Crenshaw, who eloquently explained some of the underlying challenges facing expectant Black women, and why it’s so important that they receive and have access to high-quality health care.

Remembering Dr. Wilbert C. Jordan from ABWP

With a heavy heart, the Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) announces the passing of a true giant in medicine who committed his entire career to the advancement of treatment, innovative research, and the promotion of progressive health policies- Dr. Wilbert Jordan.

An Infectious Disease physician, HIV/AIDS expert, researcher, and scholar, Dr. Wilbert Jordan's career blazed a trail for generations of healthcare professionals; transformed medical and public health communities; and positively affected thousands of patients and their families. Over the more than 40 years of ABWP’s existence, he avidly supported our organization. We are left with a tremendous sense of gratitude for his brilliance, compassion and generosity.

Dr. Jordan earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University, medical doctorate from Case Western Reserve University, and a Master of Public Health from UCLA, where he also completed his clinical training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar. Subsequently, his involvement in the care of and advocacy for patients with HIV began in the earliest years of the epidemic. In 1979, he treated his first patient and diagnosed one of the first cases of heterosexual transmission in L.A. County.

As an indisputable testimony to the impact of his legacy, Dr. Jordan started the AIDS Clinic at King-Drew Medical Center in 1984, now known as the OASIS Clinic. The model of care provided by OASIS Clinic was cutting edge and revolutionary at the time - as Dr. Jordan insisted on providing culturally competent healthcare and addressing the social determinants of health well before this was recommended practice by public health experts. Dr. Jordan also developed the Focused Intervention model, identifying the zip codes with the highest rates of HIV, STD, and teenage pregnancy then targeting effective outreach/testing programs to those hot spots.

As a nationally recognized expert, Dr. Jordan contributed to the Report of the Secretary's Task Force on Black & Minority Health in 1985 and the National Commission on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome in 1987. He also received the Surgeon General's Award in 2000 for his involvement with the NIH-sponsored DATRI Study on low-dose oral alpha interferon; chairing the Los Angeles County Commission on HIV & AIDS in the early 1990s; and service on the Los Angeles County HIV Planning Council and the Prevention and Planning Committee since their inceptions. Additionally, he previously served as medical director for the Minority AIDS Project and chaired the Black Los Angeles AIDS Consortium.

Dr. Jordan was named "Doctor of the Year" three times by the Charles R. Drew Medical Society. It was undeniably well deserved when ABWP honored Dr. Jordan at our 2001 Annual Charity Benefit. In 2002, he received the inaugural Black Entertainment Television's Community Service Pioneers Award. One special recognition that spoke volumes about the heart of this giant in medicine was the honor bestowed by the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), which created the Dr. Wilbert C. Jordan Research Forum to celebrate achievements in medicine and science.

So much knowledge is always shared with our students as Sister-to-Sister is one of ABWP's signature programs that allows for our members to pay it forward to future black female doctors.

Black Women's Lives Count: Reclaiming Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE)

Please join us on December 8th at 3:30 pm PT, when the Center for the Study of Racism, Social Justice & Health will be co-hosting a virtual panel of speakers as a fundraiser with the Black Coalition Fighting Back Serial Murders. 100% of funds raised will go towards installing a permanent memorial for the mostly black women victims of serial murder in South Los Angeles with the hopes of giving the family members a place to go to reclaim the dignity of their lost loved ones. The panelists are noted historian Robin D.G. Kelley (UCLA), who is on the Center’s executive board, and Terrion Williamson (University of Illinois at Chicago), whose pathbreaking research has been uncovering and documenting patterns in the serial killing of black women in the Midwest.

ABWP Member Spotlight, Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell - TEDx

Why black patients don’t trust the healthcare system | Bayo Curry-Winchell | TEDxReno

Dr. Curry-Winchell discusses the gaps in healthcare focusing on racially based medical algorithms and its impact on health outcomes for Black patients. Dr Curry-Winchell highlights historical and current racial practices in health care and shares some of the personal challenges she faces as a Black female physician and discusses how representation can help combat these issues.

Dr. Curry-Winchell is the Medical Director of Community Engagement and Health Equity, Co-lead of DEIB, a practicing physician and Medical Director of Urgent Care Clinics in Nevada and California for Carbon Health and Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center. Deeply involved with her community, Dr. Bayo Curry- Winchell is also the Medical Director for the Washoe County Sexual Assault Response Team and volunteers as an Assistant Medical Examiner for Washoe County Child Protective Services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell joined the Reno Mayor’s task force and Governors Medical Advisory Team. She has received many awards including the 2021 Young Physician Award from Washoe County Medical Society, 2020 PBS Reno Spotlight Extraordinary Neighbor award, Sierra Nevada’s Top 20 Most Powerful Women award in 2019 and most recently named 75 Black Healthcare leaders to know in 2022. She and her husband enjoy life in Reno-Tahoe with their two young girls. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

ABWP Organization Position Statement on Roe v. Wade

As Black women physicians, we too often witness injustice causing inhumane health care for our patients, families and communities. The failure to address social determinants of health such as housing, education, employment and access to quality health care often makes it impossible for us as physicians to heal the sick or prevent more suffering. Government-sanctioned laws, policies and practices that allow oppression and discrimination to thrive also disproportionately burden marginalized and minority people with worst health outcomes.

Therefore, we must speak up and speak out about the recent decisions handed down by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). By overturning Roe v. Wade, there are now far fewer options for anyone seeking safe reproductive healthcare in low-income and rural communities. This can only widen disparities in access to quality care across the country, especially for Black birthing people. As the only developed nation with a worsening maternal health score, the United States cannot afford to create more barriers to health care. This is one of the reasons why we choose to call out the hypocrisy. Some political leaders proclaim the sanctity of life for fetuses yet block Medicaid expansion and coverage of pregnant people (and their children) in the postpartum period. The refusal of these leaders to acknowledge and dismantle the systems and structures of racial oppression driving inequities in health outcomes reveals their indefensibly narrow definitions of “life” and “lives saved.”

Purposefully increasing the vulnerability of Black, Indigenous, Latina and other marginalized patients seeking health care is unacceptable. The overturning of Roe v. Wade dangerously disrupts the patient-physician relationship and may exacerbate patient mistrust of the medical community. As physicians, we simply cannot acquiesce to decisions that interfere with how we care for these vulnerable patients nor should we experience adverse legal ramifications for practicing evidence-based medicine solely decided by where state boundaries begin and end.

However, the real and present danger of this ruling goes far beyond the issue of abortions. The decision explicitly denied any fundamental right for a woman to make private and personal decisions about her body and her health. Even more worrisome, Justice Clarence Thomas openly opined that the judicial argument used to overturn Roe v. Wade warranted reconsidering and reversing other past SCOTUS decisions, such as the right to use birth control. ABWP, however, stands in solidarity with the reproductive justice movement and all people in the fight for the power to retain agency in our health decisions. In doing so, we also demand that Black and other marginalized women move from the periphery of the “pro-choice” movement into a place of recognition and prioritization. “Pro-choice” must include tackling uncomfortable racial issues such as systematic sterilization, punitive welfare reform, systematic imprisonment of minoritized populations, and LGBTQ+ rights – all of which influence who has privilege in making sexual and reproductive choices.

ABWP also recognizes that we cannot merely vacillate through anger, shock and horror about the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Two subsequent SCOTUS rulings confirmed the urgent need for OUR alarm and action. The Castro-Huerta case struck a major blow to the sovereignty of Native American tribes by granting the state of Oklahoma authority to prosecute non-Native Americans who commit crimes against Native Americans on tribal lands. This decision completely disregarded precedent for the right of Native American tribes to remain free from state interference with their governance. The other SCOTUS decision gutted the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency to take actions that address climate change. Similar to Roe v. Wade, the EPA decision now provides a judicial argument for limiting how the EPA and other federal agencies act to protect the health and wellbeing of U.S. citizens, particularly those with limited political and financial power in this country.

Like our elders and ancestors before us, we refuse to accept a status of second-class citizenship. We know our advocacy must include the doctor’s office and the voter’s booth. We act in solidarity with grassroots organizations experienced in fighting for reproductive health justice. We stand up for ourselves as Black women and as physicians who believe injustice has no place in the patient exam room. Millions of vulnerable people are depending on us as Black women physicians to speak and act. We are encouraged by President Biden’s recent executive order protecting access to reproductive healthcare services. This action will help protect our patients. As physicians, we will also continue to advocate for health justice and support actions that save lives.

Through conversations guided by medical trainees, this documentary highlights the narratives of eight Providers and Black birth givers navigating the medical system in the Orange County and Southern California area. It will be a part of a larger 10-module Anti-Racism in Obstetrics and Gynecology curriculum designed to help bring awareness and education to medical professionals and trainees. After viewing this documentary, viewers will hold the tools to advocate for Black birth givers in a clinical setting, learn of specific examples of medical racism within obstetrics/gynecology, and understand the diversity of birthing experiences. This documentary was made possible by the support of the UCI Office of Inclusive Excellence Spirit Grant awarded to Dr. Carol Major.

ABWP President, Dr. Cozzette Lyons Jones, Statement Regarding the Improvements Needed for the Match Process

ABWP congratulates those who successfully navigated the 2022 Match, especially our Black medical students. This year, 47,675 applicants applied for 38,205 positions. Of those, 36,277 were for PGY-1 positions. The NRMP celebrated the record number of available positions, but opportunities to improve the GME process exist.

As an organization, we also express our concerns that the ongoing discrepancy between graduating students and PGY-1 positions exacerbates student debt burdens. Black and other students underrepresented in medicine disproportionately bear financial stress from student loan debt. We applaud the vulnerability, bravery and transparency of those sharing their stories of not matching this year. We know this experience exacts a mental and emotional toll on your wellbeing.

We call on the ACGME to set a standard across all programs for use of holistic review when ranking and selecting trainees across all programs. This can help address the persistent lack of racial and ethnic representation in our training programs. We must create changes to our system given the evidence that racial/ethnic concordance between physician-patient can improve health outcomes. This is one way to move beyond performative acts of allyship and start to dismantle structural and systemic racism within our profession.

To the students of the African diaspora who remain among the unmatched, stay the course! Remember you have already proven that you belong here. While we and so many others advocate for change, do not dare abandon your dreams of becoming physicians. We believe in you. Your patients need you. You are more than enough.

Queen Latifah Opened Up About Being a Caregiver for Her Late Mother: ‘I Would Just Want to Fall Apart’.

Queen Latifah is raising awareness for the plight of caregivers—those who selflessly put their lives on hold to tend to a loved one in need. The actress herself played the role when her late mother, Rita Owens, was diagnosed with Scleroderma-associated Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), and although the actress loved her mother deeply, she recently admitted to Self that it was no easy job.

Scleroderma is a rare autoimmune disease that affects connective tissue by producing too much collagen, and in some cases—like Owens’—can cause scarring of the lungs also known as ILD. The scarring is irreparable, according to Mayo Clinic, and can lead to high blood pressure, heart failure, and respiratory failure.

To help spread this message and to give the public a glimpse into what she endured with Owens, who died in 2018, Latifah appears in Beyond Breathless, a documentary about individuals’ experiences with LID. The project is one she knew her mom would’ve wanted to be a part of.

It is with great pride as President of the Association of Black Women Physicians, to celebrate all who are in our sacred sisterhood of Black Women Physicians.

Thank you for your tireless efforts caring for the community and leading while Black-an often thankless but nonetheless needful role we fulfill. You are the sheroes moving in the legacies of our ancestors- Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in the U.S., Dr. Patricia Era Bath, the first Black woman to complete residency in Ophthalmology and the inventor of laser cataract surgery, proof that outside perspectives are critical to innovation, and many others. We are because they were! As we continue to do the work amidst the ongoing pandemic, be revived by the rich history of queens who went before you, the encouragement and strength of those who stand beside you, and the energy of the Black women in the pipeline striving to be where you are today.

Apply for Government Loan Repayment in Return for Service

In November, Vice President Harris announced a historic investment that will enable the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) to make an unprecedented number of loan repayment awards to medical, dental, and behavioral health professionals working in underserved communities across the country.

The $800 million in American Rescue Plan funding gives the most clinicians in history the opportunity to receive up to $100,000 in loan repayment as part of the National Health Service Corps . In her remarks, Vice President Harris noted the funding will help diversify the health workforce and provide access to equitable health care for all Americans.

Applications Accepted through February 3

Physicians are eligible for three separate National Health Service Corps programs accepting applications through February 3. Physicians choose the program that best suits their eligibility, including:

NHSC Loan Repayment Program – Up to $50,000 for two years of full-time service at an NHSC-approved site
NHSC Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Workforce Loan Repayment Program – Up to $75,000 for three years of full-time service at an NHSC-approved SUD treatment facility
NHSC Rural Community Loan Repayment Program – Up to $100,000 for three years of full-time service at a rural, NHSC-approved SUD treatment facility

Each year ABWP does a Christmas Toy Drive and over the Holiday, ABWP's generous members participated in a fundraiser to send a cash donation as well as toys and clothing items to the children of Jenesse Center in Los Angeles.

Founded in 1980, the Jenesse Center is a nonprofit domestic violence intervention and prevention organization with a resolute mission: to restore, and provide trauma informed, culturally responsive, holistic, comprehensive services to survivors and families impacted by domestic and sexual violence, and to advance prevention modalities to sustain healthy and safe communities free of violence. Jenesse works locally, nationally and globally to shine a light on violence against women, girls, men and boys and advocates the basic human right for all people to have peace in their homes and relationships. Jenesse’s culturally sensitive programs and services not only transition families from crisis to self-sufficiency, but transforms the lives of its clients and the community at large by offering education, referrals and resources that go beyond shelter.

Additionally, Dr. Lyons-Jones completed the Executive Masters of Public Health program and is a recipient of the Ann G. Quealy Memorial Fellowship Endowment Award from UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy & Management, identifying her as an influencer impacting the public health landscape.

“Only two-thirds (63%) of those who knew they had HIV had the virus under control through effective treatment. Young people and African Americans were least likely to have the virus under control.”

“About 18% (219,700) of the 1.2 million people who could benefit from PrEP, a daily pill that prevents HIV, had received a prescription for the medication. Coverage was especially low among young people, African Americans, and Latinos who could benefit from PrEP.”

This Summer, ABWP is offering an opportunity for intense MCAT academic preparation to 50 deserving African-American students, both male and female. In collaboration with the Kaplan MCAT preparatory course platform, this opportunity will increase student academic preparedness for the MCAT this September.

To Apply there is a Two-Step Process

1. Download/Complete and Return the MCAT-PREP Scholarship Application

2. Pay the $200 Application Donation Fee.

The Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) will offer 50 deserving African-American students an opportunity for intense MCAT academic preparation this Summer. Starting mid-June 2021, these selected students will receive both digital instruction via our collaboration with the Kaplan MCAT preparatory course platform ($3000) value and direct one on one instruction coordinated with STEM facilitators to increase their academic preparedness for the MCAT this September. The course will include over 100 tutoring hours including stress reduction and yoga instruction for mindfulness adaptation. The application fee has been set at $200 which will be fully refundable upon acceptable completion of the program. The top students will receive financial support for their planned AMCAS applications this Fall. The program will give priority to first time applicants with a competitive science GPA. Given time constraints, the acceptance committee will employ a rolling admissions process for qualification. In keeping with the ideals of the mission and vision of ABWP, all students male and female will be required to submit a short paragraph detailing their vision for medicine and how this opportunity attending the MCAT-PREP program will enhance their application success.

Applicants must be in good academic standing at any undergraduate US institution. Students will be required
to sign a waiver from AMCAS for their scores to be released to ABWP for metrics documentation.
All applications must complete and include the following: academic transcripts, (un-official is ok) $200 application fee ( payable on ABWP website), high quality photo (.jpeg preferred format) and a typed personal one-paragraph statement.
Application deadline is June 18 , 2021.
Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

If selected, the recipient will be notified no later than June 25, 2021 with a start date of June 28,2021.

Gun Violence Statement

April 13, 2021

Some shopped for groceries in Boulder, Colorado. Others arrived for appointments at spas in Atlanta, Georgia. Several more simply were going about their usual day at an office building in Orange, California. Women, men and children from different racial and ethnic backgrounds were victims of these three recent mass shootings. Gun violence continues to rob families of their loved ones and leave them heartbroken. For physicians and many others, a life taken too soon horribly exemplifies the worst possible health consequence of untreated gun violence in our country.

Recognizing violence, specifically gun violence, as a public health crisis requires more than a new medication or surgical procedure to eradicate it. It necessitates a public health response that includes massive education campaigns about the harms of gun violence as well as reforming how people access and use guns in our country. In the United States, more than 60% of deaths that involve the use of a gun are deaths by suicide. Over 30% of deaths involving guns are associated with homicides. Expanding background checks and prioritizing research on gun violence prevention are essential to decreasing the number of victims mourned by their families.

For the Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP), however, we also emphasize the need to heal the loved ones left behind after these tragedies unfold. Beyond the mental and behavioral health challenges faced by grieving loved ones, we know that entire communities suffer trauma too, and it often perpetuates the continuation of more violent acts. Concurrently, many continue to endure the difficulties exacerbated by this pandemic such as job loss, economic instability, housing evictions and long-term disability brought about by post-COVID syndrome. In response to these mounting problems, ABWP supports passage of legislation that offers solutions for increasing badly needed resources to behavioral health systems currently collapsing under the pressure of exploding demands for mental health care. We specifically amplify the input of mental health experts addressing the complex grief of Black and Brown communities experiencing increased incidents of racial abuse, disproportionate illness and death from COVID-19 and agonizing numbers of deaths that involve the use guns.

Additionally, our Association demands that conversations about gun reform include anti-biased, anti-racist, nuanced discussions about culturally attuned remedies to gun violence occurring in predominantly Black and Brown communities like Chicago, Oakland, Philadelphia and St. Louis. This means that these crucial conversations must prioritize job creation, elimination of the racial wealth gap and improved access to high quality education as well as healthcare. The public health and policy response to this complex issue cannot fail to incorporate diverse, equitable and inclusive solutions to empowering marginalized communities often ignored by the media – except to justify the politicization of issues such as gun reform. This moment cannot devolve into debates about identity politics. We can no longer accept advantaging certain communities to the neglect of others. We believe that improving the health and wellness of underserved communities requires physicians to go beyond the practice of medicine. Healing our patients, families and communities includes advocating for their safety and sense of belonging.

We, the Association of Black Women Physicians, join other professional societies in declaring gun violence a public health crisis because “this is our lane” to fight for the health of our community.

California COVID-19 Rent Relief Program

ABWP understands the hardships that COVID-19 has brought upon everyone. We would like to bring awareness to the resources available for those which have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19.

California COVID-19 Rent Relief provides financial help to eligible landlords and renters for unpaid rent. Applications are now open.

If you or someone you know h ave experienced a financial hardship due to COVID-19, h ave past due rent or utilities, or have a household income that is not more than 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI), then y ou/they may be eligible to receive help to pay past due or future rent and utilities from the state of California.
