Please join us in congratulating our own Dr. Efe Chantal Ghanney Simons, who is the inaugural winner of the Diversity Equity & Inclusion Award, a new honor bestowed jointly by the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) and The Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS). This award is to be given annually for the pursuit of a career in surgery that is in alignment with the missions of AWS and SBAS. Dr. Ghanney Simons is focusing her R4 research year on issues of social justice and health disparities in urology.

The Association of Women Surgeons is committed to supporting women surgeons at various stages in their career – from medical school through retirement. It offers programs and services to: engage current and future women surgeons to realize their professional and personal goals, empower women to succeed, and excel in those aspirations through mentorship, education and a networking community that promotes their contributions and achievements as students, surgeons and leaders.

The Society of Black Academic Surgeons mission is to improve health, advance science, and foster careers of African American and other underrepresented minority surgeons. Its vision is to be the preeminent surgical organization and relevant voice in healthcare that increases the number of Black and underrepresented minority faculty in academic surgery, cultivates development of surgical scientists, promotes members to leadership positions in American and global surgery, and eliminates health disparities.
