As one of America's top medical schools, Geisel is committed to creating new generations of diverse leaders who will help solve the most vexing challenges in health care. On average, we give 35,000 anesthetics per year. We also provide physician coverage to the Surgical ICU, Acute Pain Service, Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit (CVCC), Neuro-ICU, and tele-ICU, and Perioperative Care Clinic (PCC). Our current team at DHMC consists of 44 anesthesiologists and 41 CRNAs. We also have 4 Pain Specialists who perform over 5,000 interventional pain procedures per year.

The Anesthesiology Residency includes a transitional year program and has between 7-9 residents per year. We also have an Anesthesiology Critical Care Fellowship (1-3 fellows per year), a Chronic Pain Fellowship (4 fellows per year), and a Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship (2 fellows per year). Our main areas of research activity include Perioperative Frailty, Cognitive Decline, Perioperative Pain Management, and Fluoroscopically Guided Epidural Catheter Placement, Cardiac Function during Active Labor, and Stress and Safety in Non-Operating Room Environments. One of our anesthesiologists also leads the Dartmouth Anesthesiology Innovation Lab which partners with innovators, engineers, and entrepreneurs to develop ideas to support patient care, education, and research.

In this leadership role, the Chair of Anesthesiology will have primary responsibility and accountability for the overall direction, operation, and management of the Department in accordance with the mission and goals of Dartmouth Health and The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. In addition, the Chair will collaborate and coordinate with other Dartmouth Health member hospitals in support and growth of clinical programs, academic advancement, and research opportunities.

The Chair is also an integral member of the Dartmouth Health Senior Leadership Group and of the Geisel Dean’s Academic Board.
