ABWP and Gilead Sciences, Inc. Encourages to Get HIV Testing & Know Your Status

ABWP and Gilead Sciences, Inc. encourage you to get HIV testing and make sure to #knowyourstatus.

“Only two-thirds (63%) of those who knew they had HIV had the virus under control through effective treatment. Young people and African Americans were least likely to have the virus under control.”

“About 18% (219,700) of the 1.2 million people who could benefit from PrEP, a daily pill that prevents HIV, had received a prescription for the medication. Coverage was especially low among young people, African Americans, and Latinos who could benefit from PrEP.”

Make sure to get HIV tested, know your status, and ask your doctors about PrEP.

ABWP Recently Held a Dynamic Program with Members to Encourage More Utilization of PrEP

Blacks/African Americans have been disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS since the epidemic's beginning. Black Americans represent only 12% of the US population but account for 43% of new HIV infections in 2018. Although Black/African American women represent 13% of the female population in the United States, they account for approximately 60% of new HIV infections amongst women. We must urgently counsel our community about ways to prevent HIV with safe sexual practices, condom usage and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
